The Opportunity Card

A New Pathway for Skilled Workers in Germany

Germany has introduced the Opportunity Card (“Chancenkarte”), a new initiative designed to attract skilled workers from non-EU countries by offering a more streamlined and flexible approach to job hunting in Germany.

What is the Opportunity Card?

The Opportunity Card improves your chances of making contact with German employers and finding qualified employment. Unlike the previous Job Seeker Visa, the Opportunity Card does not require a permanent employment contract before arriving in Germany. Instead, it allows for a 12-month stay to search for a job, with the possibility of part-time work (up to 20 hours per week) and trial jobs for up to two weeks per employer.

Requirements for the Opportunity Card

To qualify for the Opportunity Card, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Recognized Qualification:

  • A foreign professional or academic qualification that is fully recognized in Germany.

  • A university degree or professional qualification obtained in Germany.

  1. Points System:

  • Achieve at least six points based on factors such as qualifications, language skills, professional experience, age, previous stays in Germany, and spousal qualifications.

  • Possess sufficient financial resources to cover living costs during the job search period.

Points System Breakdown

  • Qualification Equivalence: Partial recognition of a foreign qualification (4 points).

  • Shortage Occupation: Qualification in a shortage occupation (1 point).

  • Professional Experience: Two years within the last five years (2 points), or five years within the last seven years (3 points).

  • Language Skills: Above A1 German (1-3 points depending on level) and English at C1 or native speaker (additional 1 point).

  • Age: Up to 35 years (2 points), 35-40 years (1 point).

  • Previous Stays in Germany: At least six months in the last five years (1 point).

  • Spousal Qualifications: Spouse meeting Opportunity Card requirements (1 point).

Benefits of the Opportunity Card

  • Easy, Fast, and Legal Entry: Simplifies the entry process without requiring a permanent job contract.

  • Job Search and Part-Time Work: Allows a one-year stay for job searching, with opportunities for part-time work and trial jobs.

  • Path to Permanent Residence: Potential to extend the stay and apply for permanent residence after finding suitable employment.

  • Income Opportunities: Part-time work can help cover living expenses, with the minimum wage in Germany currently at €12.00 per hour.
